Embark on a visual journey through the vibrant city of Athens, where ancient history blends with 21st century culture.
As you traverse the bustling streets and historic landmarks, you'll discover a vast amount of Instagram-worthy spots waiting to be captured.
From the majestic Acropolis to the quaint alleyways of Plaka, each location offers a unique, ancient backdrop for your photos.

1) The Acropolis
The Acropolis, an iconic citadel perched high above the city of Athens, stands as a testament to the grandeur and achievements of ancient Greece. The Parthenon, dedicated to Athena in the 5th century BC, is the real showstopper of the Acropolis.

The Acropolis wasn’t just an architectural wonder, it was the religious and cultural heart of ancient Athens.
Its iconic columns and intricate sculptures have influenced artists and architects for centuries. There’s plenty to marvel at atop this hill perched above Athens, so grab your camera!
Not to be outdone, the Erechtheion adds some serious flair to the Acropolis with its stunning porch of the maidens.

Consider purchasing a 'skip the line' entry ticket to the The Acropolis complex as the queues can be very long indeed. We purchased tickets ahead of time and still had to wait in line. Combo tickets are also a good option to gain entry to more archaeological sites.
2) Odeon of Herodes Atticus
We stumbled across this wonder while departing the Acropolis. Situated on the southwest corner, this outdoor amphitheater definitely deserves a photo or two. If time permits, try to book an open-air performance as this is still an operating theater.

3) Ancient Agora
Once the center of Athens, Ancient Agora offers an abundance of green space with several amazingly intact ancient structures worthy of your camera.
The highlight for me was the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos. Mind the very small wandering tortoises in the green areas. My son spent a great deal of time tortoise hunting in the grounds!

4) Panathenaic Stadium - The Original Olympic Stadium
Built in AD 144, it’s the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. Seating approximately 50,000 spectators, it was mostly abandoned in the 4th century until it was excavated in 1869. The stadium hosted the first modern day Olympics in 1896 and was used again as a venue in the 2004 Olympics.

The magnificent stadium is also the finishing point for the Athens Marathon. Open daily from 8am - 7 pm general admission is 10€ and can be easily purchased at the entrance.

5) Plaka Neighborhood
Plaka is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens and the one with the most charm!

As most of the streets have been closed to vehicular traffic, dinning alfresco in this neighborhood is a must.
The two main streets are Kydathineon and Adrianou, you can’t miss them. The atmosphere after dark at the Mnisikleous Steps makes this area a top destination while in Athens.
Try either Anefani or Yiasemi for some good eats. Feel free to sit on the steps if you’re just partaking in a beverage.

6) Little Kook
Little Kook is one of the most unique and quirky streets I’ve over stumbled across anywhere in the world. It’s like be dropped into Alice in Wonderland's storybook.
This magical place also changes throughout the year with the change of the seasons. Take a few hundred shots while passing through or sit with a coffee and a sweet to take it all in.
7) Monastiraki Square
This is one of the main central squares in Athens that encompasses Hadrian’s Library (just outside the square) and one of the oldest Byzantine churches. With its many vendors of souvenirs, food & drink and knock-off football gear (soccer for the Americans), it’s a lively spot and worth a stroll.

8) Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus
Hadrian’s Arch, commonly known as Hadrian’s Gate, still stands at one of the entrances to the Athens National Garden. Don’t let the busy traffic deter you from getting your shot. You may have better luck shooting from inside the park.
As an added bonus, take a short walk inside the garden to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Construction began in the 6th century BC, but wasn’t completed for another 638 years!

9) Psyri Neighborhood
Psyri is a wonderful neighborhood for restaurants, tavernas and boutique hotels. Prior to the 90’s, it was not the most desirable neighborhood, but now it’s quite trendy and also rather charming.

We tried both Lithos Tavern and Thes 'Greek Creative Cuisine'. Enjoy some al fresco dining for some great people watching.
10) Dinner with THE View...
For a slightly upscale dinner, head Stork Rooftop Bar and Restaurant. The view of the Acropolis is outstanding.

Oh and... Athens Hotel
The newly remodeled Praxitelous Luxury Suites was perfect! The fresh breakfast was served at the super cool restaurant next door, Dal Professore Gastro Bar.
Whether you're drawn to ancient ruins, vibrant street scenes, or sweeping city views, Athens offers an incredible array of photo opportunities for the curious and seasoned traveler.
Start with these spots and enjoy simply wandering the ancient city capturing one frame at a time.
